Fraud & Fraudulent Practices
Fraud is generally considered a crime against property. Laws vary by state, but a person is typically guilty of fraud if he or she with intent to deceive or injure anyone:
 | Falsifies, destroys, removes, or conceals any deed, mortgage, security instrument, or other writing for which the law provides public recording. |  | Makes false statements to merchants as to financial condition. |  | Makes false, misleading and deceptive sales claims and/or misleading advertisements. |  | Make false entries, etc., on books of corporation. |  | Makes false reports, etc., by officers of banks, trust companies, etc., with intent to defraud. |  | Issues fraudulent certificate of stock of corporation. |  | Makes false invoice, affidavit or false and fraudulent insurance claims to defraud insurer. |  | Makes fraudulent markings or brandings or fraudulently changing marks on animal. |  | Makes false entries and statements by investment companies offering stock or security for sale. |  | Obtains a mortgage, mortgage note, promissory note, etc., by false representation. |  | Misrepresents association with, or academic standing at, postsecondary educational institution and/or makes false claims of academic degree or title. |
Penalties vary by state and range from a misdemeanor to a felony depending on the specific nature of the false statements or misrepresentations and state laws.
